I finally managed to start on the laser cutting/etching last week, onto gloss black acrylic.

Before peeling off the protective paper I coloured in the etching using Posca paint markers (white, blue, and orange/yellow):

Once it was dry I removed the paper and was left with this:

It looks great, except that I really didn't like the gloss black. It's very reflective and hard to photograph, and I don't really want what's essentially a mirror at the back of our booth at conventions.
So I sanded it with 800-grit sandpaper and it now has a slightly brushed-metal look to it, which I really like:

Next up I'll be cutting/etching the lower panel, hopefully on Thursday night this week:

Still no new photos or videos of the original prop at the Medici Museum in Ohio, there was even a really good news report about the exhibition but they didn't show this one:
